Because of these properties, cesium-137 is a major contributor to the total radiation released during nuclear accidents. Cesium is also used in atomic clocks, in photoelectric cells and as a catalyst in the hydrogenation of certain organic compounds. Since it is easily ionized and has a high mass, cesium ions may one day be used as a propellant in ion engines on spacecraft. Cesium reacts violently with water and ice, forming cesium hydroxide (CsOH).

2016-02-18 · With the recent advancement of ICP-MS, it is necessary to improve the corresponding separation method for rapid and precise (135)Cs/(137)Cs atomic ratio analysis. A novel separation and purification technique was developed for the new generation of triple-quadrupole inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS). Ar (Cs) = 132.905 451 96 (6) since 2013. The name derives from the Latin caesius for "sky blue", which was the colour of the caesium line in the spectroscope. Caesium was discovered by the German chemist Robert Wilhelm Bunsen and the German physicist Gustav Robert Kirchhoff in 1860. The isotopic ratio of 135 Cs/ 137 Cs has been highlighted as a useful long-term tracer for radioactive contamination source identification since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. Determination of this ratio in environmental samples is still challenging due to the extremely low levels (<1 pg g −1) of 135 Cs and 137 Cs. The Cs-134 isotope was used in hydrology as a measure to determine cesium production in nuclear energy industries. This cesium isotope is used for this purpose because, although it is less common than Cs-133 or Cs-137, it is produced only by nuclear reactions.

Caesium-137 (atomic mass 137) is a heavier, radioactive isotope of Caesium (Cs) whose most stable form is Cs-133. Silvery white, soft, and malleable, Cs-137 is one of the very few metals that exist in liquid form at room temperature. (A more common example is mercury.) Cesium. The compounds of cesium are similar to those of potassium. This presents a particular hazard when radioactive cesium-137 contaminates the soil, as it did near Chernobyl.

Note that, each element may contain more isotopes, therefore this resulting atomic mass is calculated from naturally-occuring isotopes and their abundance. The unit of measure for mass is the atomic mass unit (amu). One atomic mass unit is equal to 1.66 x 10-24 grams. It is also a β -emitter, which means it undergoes β -decay by a neutron decaying into a proton, releasing an electron. Protons and neutrons have the same mass, so the mass number doesn't change. 3×10 -4 milligrams per liter Jefferson Lab, U.S. Department of Energy 3 History The name derives from the Latin caesius for "sky blue", which was the colour of the caesium line in the spectroscope.
